The early quarter horse was originated upon Arab, Barb and Turk breeds shipped to America by Spanish traders and explorers where they were crossed with stock which arrived from England. This cross produced the Quarter horse, which could run ¼ mile distances faster than any other horse.
As the country grew quarter mile racing was replaced with longer distance races which the stocky Quarter Horse was not suited to the Quarter horse changed from a sporting horse to a working horse. The breed went west with the pioneers, and worked on cattle ranches, establishing its reputation.
The Stock type Quarter horse is small with powerful hindquarters; they are built to work with cattle. Western pleasure show horses are taller with but still have large hindquarters.
Halter Quarter horses are larger than the stock type and very heavily muscled. This type is bred to be muscular with small heads and refined muzzles.
The Racing type Quarter horse tends to be larger and leaner with longer legs. They have powerful hindquarters, but they are built for speed rather than the quick, short movements of cow horses.
The Hunter type Quarter horse relies more on early Thoroughbred influences and tend to be even slimmer than even the racing type.
